Activities, Clubs, and Organizations
Students at Kadena High School are encouraged to participate in one or more of the many extra-curricular activities available. Besides a well-rounded athletic program, the following activities are offered on a year-by-year basis:

Advanced Absences
Students who know in advance that they are going to be absent for an extended period of time should obtain a Pre-Authorized Extended Absence Form from the appropriate administrator. If permission is granted, it is the student's responsibility to make up work missed. When this form has been completed, it should be returned to the main office. When a vacation is being planned during the school year, careful consideration should be given to the effect an extended absence would have on the student's schoolwork.
Accreditation
Kadena High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA). To meet accreditation status the school must submit to an annual review of its educational program together with an on-site team visitation every 5 years by an NCA visiting team. Kadena High School was last visited in February 2007.
Appointments
Students and parents are encouraged to make appointments with teachers, counselors, and administrators (in that order) for discussion of personal and scholastic problems as they arise. Appointments may be made by contacting the person concerned directly or by calling the Counseling Center (634-0701) or the main office (634-1216/634-1712).
Attendance Policy
It is expected that all students will attend school regularly and punctually. Regular attendance is vitally important as it promotes successful learning as well as development of the habits needed for the responsibilities of adult life, especially in the workplace. Although it is possible to make up reading and written assignments, it is not possible to replicate teacher directed lessons, class discussions, laboratory experiences, etc. Missing this instruction may adversely affect the students learning and therefore, her/his grades. Sponsors are responsible for ensuring that students arrive on time and attend classes regularly unless they are ill, have medical or dental appointments, have followed procedures outlined below for Advanced Notification and Request for Excused Absence, or unless an emergency occurs. A Doctor's excuse is required and/or a parent conference with the counselor or administration when excessive absences or tardies are noted. Additionally, the names of students who fail to arrive to school on time or to justify excessive absences from school will be forwarded to the Kadena Disciplinary Action Program (KDAP). When a childs educational success is impacted by excessive absences, Family Advocacy will be contacted to work with the family.
Awards Ceremonies
Kadena High School recognizes academic excellence at Awards Assemblies held quarterly. Outstanding students are selected by subject area and are awarded certificates of excellence or academic letters. Senior class scholarships are announced at the fourth quarter Awards Assembly.
Cell Phones, Pagers, Portable Radios, Tape and CD Players, and Skateboards
These items are a distraction in the classroom and are not permitted at School. If a student brings one of theses devices to School, it will be taken from the student and turned into the office. Such items can be claimed by parents at any time during the School year.
Class Valedictorian/Salutatorian
Eligibility is based on a full time student status, defined as enrollment in seven classes. The student must also be enrolled in the Kadena High School senior class within the first marking period of the School year and complete the year with that class.
Closed Campus
Kadena High School maintains a closed campus policy. All requests
to leave the campus while school is in session must be cleared through the office.
Students must have parental permission and must sign out in the office before
leaving. Leaving school without permission is classified as truancy and will
be dealt with accordingly.
Dangerous Items
Any item in the possession of a student which can be perceived as a threat or posing a danger to anyone, i.e. weapons, knives, metal knuckles, chains, studded accessories, etc. is considered illegal and a violation of School and base policies resulting in an immediate suspension and being reported to security police.
Discipline
Students are subject to disciplinary action for failure to abide by rules, regulations and accepted standards or behavior. School regulations are in effect whenever a student is on School grounds or under School supervision and during those time periods when School-sponsored functions are occurring. Discipline will be based on the severity and frequency of the infraction, ranging from verbal reprimands, through parental conferences, 18th Support Group notification and suspension or expulsion.
Displays of Affection
Public display of affection (i.e.. hugging, kissing, etc.) is not appropriate in School, on School grounds and during School-sponsored activities.
Distraction to the Classroom
Celebrating birthdays with balloons and other expressions of celebration will not be permitted in the classroom during the instructional day. Should balloons, flower bouquets, stuffed animals, toys, etc., be delivered to the school for students, the student will be notified to come to the office at the end of the day to pick up the items.
DODD Standardized Testing
Each year, tests of basic skills are given to measure the status of achievement for DODDS students in the areas for Science, Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Social Studies.
Teachers review the scores for each grade level relative to their academic subject area, determine strengths and weaknesses, establish priorities and devise action plans for instruction. From this information an over School Improvement Plan is compiled to improve the mastery level of our students.
Dress
Personal appearance is a subject on which opinions can and do vary. To be fashionably dressed is not necessary, but to be properly dressed is. Students and parents should assume responsibility for acceptable appearance. A student will jot be permitted to attend classes if his/her appearance does not meet School standards. Parents will be notified by the administration, and the student will be sent home to change.

Early Departure From School
When student departs Okinawa before the end of the school year, two types of grades may be given, depending upon the time frame and the intentions of the student. A student who leasves before the early departure date of the semester may receive only a "grade to date." A student who leaves after the early departure date may receive quarter and semester grades or a grade to date.
Early departure dates are established each school year and fall 20 days before each semester ends. If the student is departing the island within the last 20 days of a semester and has submitted PCS orders to the school at least 4 weeks prior to departure date, then he/she may receive a semester grade.
Excused Absences
Kadena High School uses a computerized system for tracking attendance each period. When a students is absent from classes, the parent or sponsor should notify the main office by calling 634-1216 or 634-1712 on the day of the absence. Without verbal notification, the absence is considered unexcused. The administration will determine if the Absence is to be excused.
Graduation with Honors
In order for a student to graduate with honors from a DoDDS-Pacific school, the individual student's program of study must include geometry, Algebra II, Chemistry, advanced biology or physics, two years of a foreign language, and the student must meet the standard graduation requirements. The grade point average must be 3.5 or better.
Guidance Services
Kadena High School Counseling Center is staffed with full time counselors in order that services may be provided to you as quickly and as efficiently as possible. You are encouraged to contact our Counseling Center whenever he need arises. Appointments may be made with the secretary in the Counseling Center by dialing 634-0701/0702. Emergencies will be handled at anytime. The following services are offered through the Counseling Center.

Hall Passes
All students are assigned to specific rooms each period of the day. Students must have a pass in either possession when they leave a room.
"High Five" Award
This award is earned when a student increases their grade point average (GPA) by .5 for the quarter.
Homework Policy
Homework is defined as assignments to be done outside the classroom. The assignments: reinforce classroom instruction, increase understanding, encourage retention, prepare for class discussion and provide curriculum enrichment opportunities.
Incomplete Grades
An incomplete ("I") grade may be given at the end of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd quarter if a student is unable to complete all requirements for course (s) work during the quarter for medical or emergency reasons. However, upon return to School, the student will be given time to makeup work missed during the leave.
Internet Usage
DODDS POLICY: The Internet makes it possible to access computers and people all over the world. Therefore, it is impossible to control all materials, and an industrious user may discover controversial information which may not be considered to have educational value. However, DODDS firmly believe that the valuable information on this network far outweighs the possibility that users may find undesirable materials.
Locker Rules
School lockers are available to all students. Students must furnish their own locks and are responsible for securing their locker. Many students experience locker problems during the school year because they fail to practice locker security. Students are reminded not to change lockers without first obtaining permission from an administrator. Students are warned NOT to give keys or combinations to friends and associates. Kadena High School is not secured due to university classes, so students should not leave valuables at the school overnight. Students should not write on lockers. STUDENTS CANNOT SHARE LOCKERS!! THE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ITEMS LOST OR STOLEN FROM STUDENT LOCKERS.
Lost and Found
All lost articles should be turned in to the Supply Room (#150). On the last day of each month, all articles will be donated to a local charity.
Physical Education
Anytime a student is not able to participate in the regular Physical Education Program the Parent or guardian must write a note requesting the student be excused form the activity or be given a modified activity.
A doctor's note is required if a student needs to be excused for more than 3 days. This note will be placed in the student's health file and the student will be assigned work which will allow the student to earn credit.
Progress Reports
Progress reports are a means of keeping both students and parents informed of the student's current grade status in a particular class. These reports are mailed to the sponsor midway through the grading period. However, they can be given at any time. Progress reports are issued to students who are achieving below expected level or who are currently earning a "D" or "F". A duplicate copy of the progress report is kept in the students's cumulative file.
Principal's Honor Roll
A student earning an overall grade point average of 3.6 or better with no grade lower than "C" during a marking period, will be listed on the Principal's Honor Roll for that marking period. Students who remain on the Principal's Honor Roll for 3 consecutive marking periods will be awarded the Kadena Academic Letter at the Annual Awards Day Assembly.
Sign in/out
A parent must sign out students who leave school during the school day. Students will not be called to the office until parent or guardian is present, ID is validated, and has signed the logbook. Parents must sign their child back in upon return that day. Students will not be allowed to leave campus without a parent or guardian present to check them out. Deviation from this procedure will require a parent to make prior arrangements with the school by filling out a permission to leave school form. A school administrator must approve each request.
Smoke-Free Campus
In accordance with DOD regulations, Kadena High School maintains a smoke-free environment. This means the possession or use of tobacco products is prohibited on campus at any time, to include attendance at a School-sponsored function. Any student that violates this policy will be suspended from School.
If you are smoking off-campus, you are still at risk of being suspended from School. From 6:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. smoking is prohibited anywhere in the vicinity of the School. If we are on-campus and can see you smoking off-campus, you will be suspended from School.

Student Parking/Driving
Kadena High School provides two student parking lots. One is designated for seniors only, while the other is designated for juniors. All other students must use the overflow parking lot across the street from the School. Use of the parking lot is limited to arriving and departing from School. Returning to the parking lot during the School day is not permitted, with the exception of juniors and seniors leaving campus for lunch. All base parking regulations apply to Kadena High School parking areas and access roads.
Tardies
The Kadena High School Policy states that tardy is not being in your assigned classroom by the time the tardy bell is finished ringing. Students have five minutes to pass between classes are expected to be seated when the tardy bell rings. Unexcused tardies are subject to teacher and administrative sanction.
Textbooks
Books are furnished free of charge. However, students are held responsible for loss or damages of these books. Sponsors will be required to pay for lost or damaged text and other School materials furnished to the student.
Unapproved Organizations
The activities of unapproved organizations must be kept completely
outside the School program. Any student who belongs to an unapproved organization
will not be permitted to bring the activities of that organization within the
School.
Unexcused Absences
The following reasons for missing school will be considered unexcused:
Visitors
Kadena High School is pleased to welcome visitors who are interested in its educational extracurricular activities. Visitors are required to come to the main office for assistance and to receive a pass which will identify them as "campus visitors".
A person who wishes to visit classes throughout the day must notify the school at least one day prior to the anticipated visit and must have the approval of the concerned teachers and the administration.
Vulgarity/Profanity
The use of vulgarity or inappropriate language is unacceptable conduct at Kadena High School. Students are encouraged to use appropriate language in all settings at all times. If a student uses vulgarity in the common areas of Kadena High School, the following actions will be taken:
| 1st Offense: | Teacher counseling and warning to student. |
| 2nd Offense: | Teacher counseling and warning to student. |
| 3rd Offense: | Referral of student to Vice Principal for counseling. |
| 4th and Successive Offenses: | Referral to Vice Principal for disciplinary action. |
Withdrawal Procedures
It is important that notification is given to the registrar in the Counseling Center as soon as the departure date from School is known. A copy of the sponsor's orders must be presented to the Counseling Center before withdrawal procedures may begin.
Zero Zero Tolerance" weapons policy.
Kadena High School will not tolerate weapons of any type. Dangerous and potentially dangerous weapons could be classified as pellet guns, BB guns, chains used as a weapon, small pocket knives, small firecrackers, tools, laser pens, and other objects used to threaten, frighten, or harm another individual. Students could be subject to a minimum of a five (5) day suspension up to a 36 week expulsion depending on the infraction.
